Stump grinding

Stump Grinding & Removal in York.

Stump grinding uses a machine to grind the stump 150–300mm below ground, leaving the remaining roots to rot down naturally. Your lawn stays largely intact and you can plant or build over the spot. It's the quicker, cheaper and less disruptive of the two stump options.

The alternative — full stump removal — digs out the entire stump and root plate with an excavator, leaving a sizeable hole to backfill. That's only needed where you're putting foundations, a driveway or an extension over the spot, or for aggressive re-sprouters like willow and poplar. It costs roughly 30–50% more.

Grinding is priced by stump diameter: small stumps from around £95, larger ones up to £400. Several stumps in one visit work out cheaper per stump. We clear the grindings away or leave them as mulch, whichever you prefer.

Questions

Things people ask.

Grinding or full removal — which do I need?

Grinding is right for almost everyone: it's cheaper and lets you replant or turf over. Full dig-out is only needed if you're building over the spot or the species re-sprouts aggressively. We'll advise honestly.

Will the roots grow back?

No. Once the stump is ground out and the tree is gone, the remaining roots simply decompose in the ground over a few years. There's no regrowth from a properly ground stump.

How much does a tree surgeon cost in York?

Most domestic tree jobs in York land between £150 and £1,500, depending on the tree's size, access and the volume of waste. A typical day with a full team is around £350–£500. Every quote is free and itemised.

Do I need permission to cut down a tree in York?

Possibly — if the tree has a TPO, or sits in a conservation area with a trunk over 75mm across. York has a lot of conservation area. We check before we quote and handle the council application for you.
